Logistics giant DHL Supply Chain has received its first Tesla Semi electric truck following a successful two-week trial in California. The vehicle demonstrated impressive efficiency, covering 390 miles on a single charge while fully loaded. This addition supports DHL's goals to reduce emissions and expand its electric fleet.
DHL Supply Chain has officially taken delivery of its first fully electric Tesla Semi, marking a significant step in integrating heavy-duty electric vehicles into its North American operations. The truck expands DHL's Class 8 EV fleet to more than 150 vehicles, aligning with the company's target to reduce CO₂e emissions to 29 million metric tons by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
The Tesla Semi underwent a rigorous two-week trial in Livermore, California, where it covered over 3,000 miles in regular operations. During the test, the truck achieved an efficiency of 1.72 kWh per mile while operating at average speeds exceeding 50 mph and hauling loads up to 75,000 pounds. In one notable run, it completed a 390-mile route on a single charge, validating its capability for long-haul freight without range compromises.
Now deployed in Central California, the Semi handles daily routes of approximately 100 miles, allowing it to operate for nearly a week on a single charge thanks to its 500-mile range when fully loaded. This operational flexibility minimizes charging downtime and infrastructure needs. DHL expects the truck to cut emissions by about 50 metric tons per year.
Jim Monkmeyer, President of Transportation at DHL Supply Chain North America, stated that the trial proved the Semi can handle real freight on a single charge and "unlocks opportunities that were previously beyond the limits of heavy-duty EVs." Tesla noted that DHL's experience will help refine the vehicle for global markets. Looking ahead, DHL plans to add more Tesla Semis in 2026 as production scales up, further lowering supply-chain emissions and advancing sustainability objectives.
