A drunk driver in a Porsche veered into oncoming traffic and crashed head-on into a Fiat Siena early Saturday on Avenida Conde de Frontin in Vila Matilde, eastern São Paulo. The two salty snack delivery workers in the Siena were injured, one seriously. The Porsche driver, unlicensed, tested positive for alcohol.
The crash happened early on April 4 on Avenida Conde de Frontin in Vila Matilde. João Henrique Alves Quintana, 27, was driving the Porsche at high speed and erratically, according to witnesses in the police report. He crossed into oncoming traffic and violently struck the front of a Fiat Siena carrying two workers aged 26 and 28, who had completed three salty snack deliveries and were heading to pick up more.
The Siena's passenger suffered facial and body abrasions while remaining conscious and was taken to Hospital Ermelino Matarazzo. The Siena driver is in an induced coma at Hospital das Clínicas with severe internal bleeding requiring blood transfusions. Firefighters and SAMU teams attended the scene.
Quintana showed signs of intoxication with 0.46 mg/l on the breathalyzer — over the limit — and had no driver's license. He and a 27-year-old passenger with head injuries were extricated from the wreckage and admitted to Hospital do Tatuapé under police guard. The Porsche, owned by a third party, was seized for forensic analysis.
Police are investigating, eyeing possible attempted homicide due to alcohol, speed, and lane invasion. Quintana and the passenger had visited a bar in the area beforehand.
