Egypt backs African Medicines Agency, pushes for continent-wide regulatory integration

The Egyptian Drug Authority's chairperson, Ali El-Ghamrawy, joined a virtual meeting of the African Medicines Agency to bolster regulatory cooperation across the continent. He reaffirmed Egypt's full support for the agency's operationalization, highlighting the need for continent-wide collaboration to harmonize oversight and ensure medicine quality, safety, and efficacy.

The Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA) announced that its chairperson, Ali El-Ghamrawy, participated in a virtual meeting of the African Medicines Agency (AMA) focused on enhancing regulatory cooperation and integration throughout Africa. Chaired by AMA Director General Mimi Darko, the session featured her presentation of a proposed framework for the first two years of her four-year term, described as a foundational phase to develop the agency's organizational and technical structures while setting up clear institutional processes.

El-Ghamrawy reaffirmed Egypt's complete backing for the agency's operationalization, emphasizing the critical role of continent-wide collaboration in harmonizing regulatory oversight to guarantee the quality, safety, and efficacy of medicines. He highlighted that sharing regulatory expertise among African authorities is vital for creating a strong continental system, which would boost technical capabilities, standardize practices, and build public trust in medicines across the region. The meeting included heads of African medicines regulatory authorities or their representatives, according to the EDA statement.

This endorsement aligns with broader efforts to advance pan-African health coordination, as the agency works to establish shared capacities for addressing pharmaceutical challenges on the continent.
