Ernestina Godoy Ramos assumed the interim role at the Fiscalía General de la República (FGR) following Alejandro Gertz Manero's resignation, after accepting President Claudia Sheinbaum's offer to become ambassador to a friendly country. Morena backed Godoy, praising her honesty and dedication. The Senate approved the resignation and will begin a process to select the new prosecutor.
Alejandro Gertz Manero submitted his resignation from the FGR on November 27, 2025, accepting Sheinbaum's offer to join the diplomatic service as ambassador to a 'friendly country', whose destination will be revealed after procedures at the Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores. Before leaving, Gertz appointed Ernestina Godoy as head of the Fiscalía Especializada de Control Competencial, positioning her as interim in charge per Article 21 of the FGR Law. Godoy resigned from her role in the Consejería Jurídica of the Executive Branch, where she had served since October 1, and took on the position with 'ethics, firmness, and a deep sense of justice'.
Morena's president Luisa María Alcalde praised Godoy as a 'honest woman of principles, tireless fighter for the most just causes of the people of Mexico', wishing her success. Ricardo Monreal, Morena coordinator in the Chamber of Deputies, stated that the administration of justice 'is not interrupted, altered, or distorted', and commended Gertz's personal decision as 'commendable'. Opposition legislators criticized that the embassy does not constitute a 'grave cause' for departure.
In her first moves, Godoy appointed Héctor Elizalde Mora to the Agencia de Investigación Criminal, César Oliveiros Aparicio to the Fiscalía de Delincuencia Organizada, and Laura Ángeles Gómez to the Oficialía Mayor. Sheinbaum stressed the need for greater coordination between the FGR, the Secretariat of Security, and the National Guard to advance security and justice.
Among the pending cases Godoy inherits are investigations into fiscal huachicol, fake invoicers, the CJNG's Rancho Izaguirre, Julio César Chávez Jr.'s organized crime case, Ismael 'El Mayo' Zambada's detention, and the probe against Raúl Rocha for arms and fuel trafficking. Sources indicate Sheinbaum pressured Gertz's resignation due to leaks in these cases, particularly the handling of the Rocha matter affecting Miss Universe. A list of 10 candidates for the new prosecutor will soon be presented for Senate ratification.
