On Tahsas 7, 2018 (FMC), in Addis Ababa, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed to strengthen the deep historical friendship between Ethiopia and India across various sectors. Prime Minister Abiy stated in a social media message that their discussions highlight growing cooperation and mutual priorities, committing to new areas of collaboration.
The Government Communication Service described the visit as elevating Africa-India relations through strengthened bilateral diplomatic ties. It enhances Ethiopia's role in India's Africa policy, including economic growth, strategic cooperation, and people-to-people connections, while affirming Ethiopia as a key diplomatic hub in African affairs. India aims to deepen partnerships beyond traditional diplomacy to amplify the Global South's voice.
Diplomatic relations were formalized in 1948 E.C., building on over 2,000 years of deep friendship. Indians engaged in trade and education in Ethiopia from the 19th century onward. Current talks focused on trade, investment, renewable energy, aviation, and digital sectors. India has inaugurated a new embassy in Addis Ababa to expand cooperation. An agreement was signed for collaboration in specific military fields, supporting capacity building, research, and cyber security. Prime Minister Abiy noted that this visit signifies the growing development of both countries.
