French woman reported missing in Spain wildfires

The Quai d’Orsay confirmed Saturday evening that a French woman is among those missing after wildfires in Andalusia. Her husband told TF1 they were encircled by flames while trying to escape.

The Foreign Ministry said identification is underway by Spanish authorities. France’s embassy in Madrid and consulate in Seville remain in constant contact with regional and national officials.

The woman’s husband, Jérôme Navarro, told TF1 that no evacuation order had been received. He described ordering his wife Stéphanie out of the vehicle before being surrounded by a ball of fire and having to flee on foot.

A violent wildfire has burned 6600 hectares near Los Gallardos in Almeria province since Thursday. It has claimed at least 12 lives and stabilized on Saturday, while hundreds of firefighters and military personnel continue operations. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez is due to visit the site on Monday.
