The remake of Front Mission 3 arrives as part of a wave of revivals for classic PlayStation titles, particularly those from Square Enix's catalog. Originally released in 2000, the game was developed and published by Square, before its merger with Enix. Forever Entertainment, which handled remakes of the series' first two entries, has brought this third installment to modern platforms including PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.
Set in a futuristic world where powerful mechs known as Wanzers shape global conflicts, the tactical RPG follows protagonist Kazuki Takemura. Players face an early choice that splits the narrative into two paths, both delving into themes of conspiracy, corporate greed, and national agendas. As the synopsis describes: “Front Mission 3: Remake is a tactical RPG set in a future where nations and corporations compete for dominance in a world shaped by powerful mechs called Wanzers.”
Updates in the remake include enhanced graphics and animations that surpass the original's visuals. The soundtrack receives a fresh take, billed as “a new approach to a classic soundtrack.” New additions comprise a quick combat mode to streamline battles and an expanded customization system for Wanzers, allowing greater personalization of mech appearances.
This release follows a long hiatus for the franchise. The last mainline entry, Front Mission Evolved, came out 16 years ago, while a 2019 spin-off, Left Alive, faced poor reception and sales. Whether these remakes will inspire a new original from Square Enix is uncertain.
