This action historical drama, created by Mike Wiluan, premiered in 2018 and consists of a single season with eight episodes. Set in the mid-1800s Dutch East Indies, the story follows an unlikely group of heroes led by a young woman named Kalia as they rebel against tyrannical Dutch colonists and seize control of a garrison town called Grisse.
The cast features Adinia Wirasti, Marthino Lio, Michael Wahr, Joanne Kam, and Zack Lee. Although it has not gained widespread recognition in the U.S., Grisse offers a fast-paced narrative centered on diverse, empowered female characters in a visually rich 19th-century setting, combined with gritty action sequences.
On Rotten Tomatoes, the series lacks a critic consensus due to limited reviews but holds a 70% audience score. Viewers have described it as “worth your time” and “very well done.” Currently, Grisse is available only on HBO Max, with no options for renting or purchasing the episodes elsewhere.
