Jakob Leander is leaving Swedish club HV71 to play for the Calgary Hitmen in the Western Hockey League. The 19-year-old defenseman signed a scholarship and development agreement with the team after being selected in the CHL draft.
The move ends Leander's four seasons with HV71's junior program. He played U20 hockey last season and trained with the club's senior team but did not make an SHL debut.
Leander, who started his career with HC Dalen, said the decision came after he felt ready for a new challenge. He cited the physical style and smaller ice surface in Canadian junior hockey as factors that suit his game.
Calgary Hitmen general manager Cass Bruni highlighted Leander's size, competitive drive and defensive skills. The club drafted him 48th overall in the 2026 CHL draft. Leander was also selected by the Calgary Flames in the 2025 NHL draft.
