India issues advisory on Strait of Hormuz voyages after vessel attacks

The Directorate General of Maritime Administration has directed shipping companies to avoid deploying Indian sailors on vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz following recent attacks.

The advisory was issued after attacks on MT Al Bahiyah and MT Mombasa in the Strait of Hormuz this week. The vessels carried 30 Indian seafarers among a combined crew of 46. One Indian seafarer was killed and another injured aboard MT Al Bahiyah, while nine Indian nationals were injured on MT Mombasa.

The Directorate General of Maritime Administration said masters of vessels in the Persian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz and adjoining waters must maintain heightened security vigilance. They are to monitor navigational warnings and implement measures in line with the International Ship and Port Security Code.

Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal had directed the authority to create a dashboard for real-time information on Indian seafarers on vessels in the region, regardless of flag. The advisory remains in effect until further orders.
