President José Antonio Kast raised from Copiapó the possibility of reversing changes at Punta Peuco prison. The leader questioned the previous government's decision to turn it into a common facility.
President José Antonio Kast reopened the debate on the regime at Punta Peuco prison during his tour of the Atacama Region. He stated there had been consensus for exclusive facilities for former members of the armed forces and police, and criticized the mixing of prison populations promoted by the Gabriel Boric administration.
Interior Minister Claudio Alvarado backed the remarks. He said the prior decision does not satisfy the president and that the government is open to evaluate, analyze and review the matter. He noted any resolution would be communicated in due course.
Leaders from the Republican Party and the National Libertarian Party defended the opening. Deputy Juan Irarrázaval warned of security risks from mixing different risk profiles. Meanwhile, former minister Jaime Gajardo criticized the idea and upheld the principle of equality before the law.
