Kimi Antonelli claimed victory in the Monaco Grand Prix, setting a record as the youngest Grand Slam winner in Formula 1 history. The Mercedes driver dominated after Max Verstappen retired early due to engine issues.
Antonelli secured pole position ahead of Verstappen by just 0.043 seconds. He then converted that advantage into a fifth consecutive win on Sunday after the Red Bull driver retired at the start. Red Bull boss Laurent Mekies said the team was surprised by Antonelli's pace. 'Kimi disappeared,' Mekies said. 'Credit to Kimi, I think he surprised all of us by being that fast around here on his second year only.' Verstappen had shown strong form in qualifying but could not race after the engine problem. Mekies confirmed the issue gave Verstappen no chance to compete for the podium. Verstappen described the weekend as good until the race start. He said the team needs to understand what went wrong to ensure races are finished.
