Kolkata Police has issued a comprehensive traffic notification to manage heavy influx around Park Street, New Town, and Maidan for New Year's Eve celebrations. Restrictions on major thoroughfares will be in place on December 31, 2025, and January 1, 2026, based on directions from Police Commissioner Manoj Kumar Verma. Revelers are advised to follow one-way traffic rules, parking regulations, and alternative routes for safe navigation.
Kolkata is bracing for heavy traffic on New Year's Eve due to parties and events, particularly around Park Street, New Town, and the Maidan. To ensure smooth flow for pedestrians and vehicles, several streets will operate as one-way or have entry restrictions. Park Street will run one-way from west to east, Shakespeare Sarani from east to west between JL Nehru Road and AJC Bose Road, Ho-Chi-Minh Sarani from west to east, and Camac Street from north to south between Park Street and AJC Bose Road.
Certain crossings will be closed: Vehicles from the Royd Street/Free School Street crossing will not be allowed toward Park Street, and no right turns will be permitted from Park Street onto Russel Street.
Parking will be challenging with strict 'No Parking' zones enforced on Park Street, Camac Street, Middleton Street, Kyd Street, Free School Street, and Wood Street. Limited parallel parking is allowed on Russel Street (eastern/western sides), Free School Street (between Royd St. and Marquis St.), and portions of Middleton Row.
Heavy and medium goods vehicles face bans toward the Maidan area from 16:00 hours on December 31 until 04:30 hours on January 1, and again in the evening of January 1. Alternative routes include AJC Bose Road, St. Georges Gate Road, Strand Road, and APC Road. Exceptions apply to vehicles carrying essential commodities and small goods vehicles under 1600 kg gross weight.
Authorities note that these regulations may be adjusted as necessary by on-duty traffic police. Commuters are advised to use Kolkata Metro and public buses, and to expect delays around JL Nehru Road and AJC Bose Road. Police personnel will be stationed at major intersections to guide traffic based on real-time conditions.
