Former socialist Prime Minister Lionel Jospin, aged 88, underwent a serious operation that went well and has returned home for recovery, according to a statement passed to AFP by his entourage.
Lionel Jospin, an iconic figure of the French Socialist Party, sought to reassure his loved ones and the public about his health. In a brief statement to Agence France-Presse (AFP), passed on by his entourage, the former head of government (1997-2002) said: “To all those worried about my health, I wish to provide the following details: I underwent a serious operation that went well. I am now back home in convalescence.”
Aged 88, Mr. Jospin did not disclose the nature or cause of this medical procedure. A candidate in the 1995 and 2002 presidential elections, where he did not prevail, he has recently weighed in on current political issues, intervening sporadically in public debate.
This announcement comes at a time when the former socialist leader remains a reference for many activists, despite his gradual withdrawal from the political scene for over two decades. His entourage provided no further details on his prognosis or the length of his recovery.
