The midseason finale of High Potential left viewers hanging as Morgan discovered a scar on Rhys' shoulder, fueling her belief that the enigmatic guest star, played by Aiden Turner, could be the elusive art thief Jean Baptiste. Returning Tuesday, January 6, at the earlier time of 9 p.m. on ABC, the episode opens with Morgan cornering Rhys in a precinct elevator for an impromptu questioning session. An exclusive first look reveals her pressing him about the contents of his briefcase, though his sly smile suggests she may not get straight answers.
Showrunner Todd Harthan emphasizes the uncertainty surrounding Rhys' guilt. "Just because he has a scar, that doesn't mean he's the guy, you don't know!" Harthan told TVLine. "We've got surprises, we've got tricks up our sleeve. We have some pretty interesting twists and turns in the [second] part. It's a really fun ride."
Harthan praised Turner's casting, noting his immediate fit for the role. "We knew right away that he was the guy," Harthan said. "We just needed [him to feel like] Pierce Brosnan or James Bond without it being too smarmy or arrogant. Like, why would Morgan be drawn to this person? Well, they'd better be smooth and smart and mysterious. All the things. So [Turner] walked in and it was just like, 'Yep, there it is.'"
Beyond the Rhys mystery, the premiere logline hints at complications from Roman's missing backpack affecting everyone involved, including Morgan. Additionally, tensions with Captain Wagner, portrayed by Steve Howey, will deepen. After calling her insubordinate in the finale, Harthan promises revelations about Wagner's character. "There's a lot going on with that guy that we're going to unpack as we learn who he is, what makes him tick, what his demons are, what his insecurities are, what he's running from and what his secret is," Harthan explained. "My hope was that the audience would be uneasy and not really know who he is or what his agenda is because it's confusing and confounding the characters around him."
This return marks the back half of Season 1, building on Morgan's stellar track record while keeping viewers guessing about Rhys' true identity.
