Mýa announces 10th studio album Retrospect

After an eight-year hiatus, R&B singer Mýa has revealed her upcoming 10th studio album, Retrospect, set for release this spring. The project, in development since 2016, draws inspiration from late 1970s and 1980s funk, R&B, and soul, blended with modern production. It arrives alongside her new single 'ASAP,' marking her independent return via Planet 9.

On February 2, 2026, Mýa announced her 10th studio album, Retrospect, during an appearance on the talk show Sherri. The album represents her first full-length release since 2018's T.K.O. (The Knock Out), ending an eight-year gap in studio projects. Expected this spring through her independent label Planet 9 in partnership with Virgin Music, Retrospect has been in progress since 2016 and serves as a personal tribute to the music that shaped her early years.

In a statement, Mýa described the album's roots: “Music wasn’t just a part of my life; it was the heartbeat of my home, the foundation of my joy. This album is a celebration of that and the kind of funk that never fades. It’s a bridge between the past and the future, honoring the greats, my inspirations, while forging something new.” The project pays homage to pioneers like Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Prince, Vanity 6, and Rick James, fusing their late ’70s through late ’80s influences with contemporary R&B elements. It will be available in Stereo, Dolby Atmos, and Sony 360 Reality Audio formats for an immersive experience.

Preceding the album is the single “ASAP,” released on January 30, 2026, and co-produced by Mýa and Lamar “MyGuyMars” Edwards. The mid-tempo track combines classic soul and funk grooves with modern production. “It’s power and sensuality in the same breath,” Mýa said of the song. She teased collaborations with 21 Savage and Joyner Lucas during her Sherri appearance.

Mýa's independent journey with Planet 9 predates the current wave of artist autonomy. She credited Prince as a key mentor who guided her early in that path, pulling her aside to inspire and support her vision.

The announcement caps an active 2025 for Mýa, including a 25th-anniversary vinyl reissue and Dolby Atmos streaming release of her debut Fear of Flying, a performance of “Case of the Ex” at the BET Awards, and joining Brandy, Monica, Muni Long, Keyshia Cole, and Kelly Rowland on “The Boy Is Mine Tour.”
