Netflix releases first-look trailer for psychological thriller Unchosen

Netflix has unveiled a first-look trailer and images for its upcoming six-part psychological thriller Unchosen, starring Christopher Eccleston and Siobhan Finneran. The series follows a woman in a cloistered Christian community whose life changes with the arrival of an escaped prisoner. No official release date has been announced.

The drama Unchosen, written by Julie Gearey known for Coronation Street, centers on Rosie, played by Molly Windsor from She Said, who lives with her husband Adam, portrayed by Asa Butterfield of Sex Education, and their daughter in a strict Christian community. The arrival of escaped prisoner Sam, played by Fra Fee from Prime Target, disrupts her world and exposes the community's constraints. As tensions rise in Rosie's marriage, Sam appears as a potential savior, raising questions about the true source of danger: the cult or Sam's criminal past.

Christopher Eccleston and Siobhan Finneran, recognized from Doctor Who and Happy Valley respectively, portray the married couple Mr and Mrs Phillips, leaders of the community. In the trailer, Eccleston's character Mr Phillips describes the group as "blessed" to live there, emphasizing that love binds them and "families flourish," while highlighting strict gender roles and warning against the evils of the outside world. The series synopsis states: "Rosie lives with her husband Adam and daughter in a cloistered Christian community. The fateful arrival of escaped prisoner Sam into her life, reveals the reality and restraints of her world; perhaps this hidden religious community doesn't have her best interests at heart. And, as the cracks begin to appear in her marriage, Sam presents as her saviour. But with his dark criminal past, where does the greatest danger lie – with the cult or with Sam?"

Directed by Jim Loach of Criminal Record and Philippa Langdale of A Discovery of Witches, Unchosen is set to stream on Netflix soon. Eccleston recently appeared in True Detective season 4 and the film Young Woman and the Sea, while Finneran featured in ITV's Protection and an episode of Death in Paradise.
