Nine children injured in Durban scholar transport crash

Nine children were injured when a school transport taxi collided with a bakkie in Durban's Glenwood area. Paramedics responded quickly, stabilizing the victims before transporting them to hospitals. The cause of the accident remains unknown.

A taxi serving as scholar transport crashed into a bakkie on Lena Ahrens Road in the Glenwood suburb of Durban, injuring nine children of various ages. The incident occurred while the taxi was carrying schoolchildren home. ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamison described the scene, noting that the vehicle had t-boned the bakkie.

"Paramedics arrived on the scene to find that a taxi carrying school kids home had t-boned a bakkie," Jamison said. "Paramedics assessed the scene and found that nine children of various ages had sustained various injuries. Immediately, more ambulances were dispatched to assist. Once triaged and stabilised on scene, the children were taken to various Durban Hospitals for further care that they required. At this stage, the events leading up to the crash are unknown."

The children suffered injuries ranging from minor to more serious, though specific details on their conditions were not immediately available. This accident highlights ongoing concerns about scholar transport safety in the region. Just last week, another incident in Pinetown, west of Durban, saw nine children hurt when their transport vehicle lost control and struck a tree near Sarnia Primary School. In that case, paramedics reported injuries from minor to moderate.

Authorities have not yet determined the factors contributing to the Glenwood crash, and investigations are underway. Such events underscore the vulnerabilities in daily commutes for schoolchildren in urban areas like Durban.
