NWPB Classical adds new programs to weekend lineup

NWPB Classical is introducing fresh music programs to its Friday and Saturday schedule starting January 9, 2026, to enhance discovery and creativity for listeners. The updates feature young classical talents, contemporary works, and NPR favorites across genres.

NWPB Classical has announced additions to its weekend programming, effective from January 9, 2026. These changes aim to deliver more inspiring and diverse content, including performances by emerging artists and discussions on modern music.

On Fridays, the schedule shifts at 1:00 PM with "From the Top," a longstanding NPR program highlighting exceptional young classical musicians nationwide. This moves to a primary slot, while the existing Sunday 12:00 PM broadcast becomes an encore, offering listeners two opportunities weekly to experience the next generation of talent.

Following at 2:00 PM is "Now THAT'S What I Call 21st Century," an original NWPB production curated by Jedd Greenhalgh. It focuses on classical compositions from 2000 onward, described as "lyrical, expressive, and firmly rooted in tradition." The program serves as a gateway to contemporary composers who blend innovation with the emotional depth appreciated by traditional audiences.

Saturdays bring genre-spanning variety starting at 2:00 PM with "Alt.Latino," which spotlights emerging Latin music artists like Mexican American R&B performer Omar Apollo and Dominican Dembow artist Tokischa. Through one-on-one interviews, the show explores Latin American history, culture, and shared Latinx identity.

At 2:30 PM, "All Songs Considered," NPR's flagship music discovery program since 2000, features host Robin Hilton and conversations on topics like the best music decades or essential albums for emotional moments.

The 3:00 PM slot introduces "Tiny Desk Radio," drawing from NPR's iconic Tiny Desk concert series. It includes intimate performances by artists such as Hozier, Alicia Keys, and Billie Eilish, alongside discoveries like Ca7riel & Paco Amoroso, creating a sense of an exclusive venue for listeners.

These updates invite audiences to incorporate the new shows into their routines for music that "inspires, surprises and connects," as per the announcement.
