Pantone officially names Bon Iver color fABLE Salmon

Pantone has designated the pinkish hue from Bon Iver's album cover as the official color fABLE Salmon, previously known as Pantone 1625 C. This marks another collaboration between the color authority and musicians, highlighting the intersection of art, music, and visual identity. The announcement ties directly to the artwork of Bon Iver's SABLE, fABLE release.

The color fABLE Salmon originates from the cover design of Bon Iver's SABLE, fABLE, where it appears alongside Black C. Previously listed as Pantone 1625 C (or 1625 CP), this shade has now received its formal name through a partnership with the artist.

Art Direction Insights

Justin Vernon, the musician behind Bon Iver, collaborated with Minnesota painter Ruben Nusz and Miles Johnson, head of art and design at Secretly Group, to develop the album's visuals. Nusz explained the process in an interview featured on the Pantone website: "It was fun dialing in the specific color to Justin’s vision. Many people don’t know that we see color through not only cultural biases but also through the lens of language. Color and language are inseparable." He noted careful adjustments to avoid making the salmon tone too red, yellow, or orange, allowing it to remain abstract and evocative. Johnson emphasized the intent behind the design: "There’s a lot of space [in cover art] that gives you access to a record, but it can also act as a barrier or alter your perception of the music. Justin was very keen here to keep peeling away any layers that might be on top."

Pantone's Musical Partnerships

This is not Pantone's first venture with music icons. Past examples include Love Symbol #2 for Prince, Pink Noise honoring Laura Mvula, and Grateful Red and Stealie Blue for the Grateful Dead. Additionally, the green from Charli XCX's Brat album corresponds to Pantone 3507 C, though it lacks an official custom name. These collaborations underscore how colors can encapsulate an artist's essence and enhance musical storytelling.

The swatch for fABLE Salmon is available on Pantone's site, inviting fans to explore its nuances tied to Bon Iver's creative world.
