Two robbery suspects are recovering from gunshot wounds after police shot at them while pursuing a gang in Likoni, Mombasa County. The incident occurred in the morning, and investigations continue. The shop's guard sustained minor injuries during the attack.
The early morning incident yesterday took place at 9:20 a.m. in the Shonda area of Likoni. According to the police report, officers on patrol received an emergency call from the shop owner reporting an intrusion by unknown individuals. Upon arrival, they found about eight people armed with dangerous weapons continuing to rob the shop.
The suspects fled upon seeing the police, prompting officers to fire shots while pursuing them. One suspect was arrested at the scene, while two others were found unconscious on the road from gunshot wounds. One was shot in the left leg below the knee, and the other in the left side.
Police recovered three mobile phones, two identified by the complainant as stolen from his shop. They also seized a machete, crowbar, and club, along with three motorcycles believed used by the gang to escape. The shop guard was slightly injured after being attacked with a blunt object before the shop was broken into.
All suspects and exhibits were taken to Inuka Police Station for legal proceedings, while the two injured suspects and the guard were rushed to Likoni Sub-County Hospital. The guard was treated and discharged in good condition, as the suspects continue treatment under heavy police guard. Police are still hunting for the remaining fugitives and conducting further investigations.
This occurred amid heightened patrols in Mombasa to curb crime during the holiday season. Commander Peter Kimani stated officers have been deployed in crowded areas like Pembe za Ndovu and Mama Ngina Park. “We have completed regular follow-ups to ensure tourists and residents feel safe,” Kimani said. Patrols have also increased in high-crime neighborhoods such as Likoni and Nyali, and popular beaches like Shelly and Nyali.
