Ricardo Monreal rules out AMLO's return from political retirement

Morena deputy Ricardo Monreal stated that the conditions are not met for former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to return to public life. Following the presentation of his book, López Obrador mentioned three extreme scenarios that would prompt his return, but Monreal dismissed them entirely. He also expressed support for President Claudia Sheinbaum and announced his participation in a march in her favor.

Former Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador made a public reappearance in Palenque, Chiapas, to present his new book. During the event, he outlined three conditions that would prompt him to end his political retirement: an attempted coup d'état, an attack on democracy, or a violation of national sovereignty.

Ricardo Monreal, Morena's coordinator in the Chamber of Deputies, rejected the likelihood of any of these scenarios occurring. “There are no possibilities of them being fulfilled. Mexico will remain democratic. A coup d'état is completely ruled out,” he declared. Monreal stressed that López Obrador has honored his promise not to engage in politics since handing over the presidential sash on October 1, 2024. “Since he left the Presidency, I haven't seen him or spoken to him on the phone,” he assured, describing the former president's reappearance as “genial”.

In agreement, President Claudia Sheinbaum stated during her morning press conference on December 1, 2024, that none of the three circumstances exist to force López Obrador's return. Sheinbaum expressed joy at the former president's good health and noted that his book Grandeza will spark debates, including indirect references to Spain.

Monreal also endorsed Sheinbaum's leadership. “The truth is, I am very surprised, pleasantly surprised by her activism, her attitude, her conduct as President of Mexico, as head of state, as defender of sovereignty,” he said. Despite social media criticisms, he highlighted that the president remains steadfast and has earned the people's affection.

Finally, Monreal announced his participation in the “Marcha del Tigre,” a mobilization by Fourth Transformation supporters scheduled for December 6, 2024. The march will start from the Ángel de la Independencia to the Zócalo in Mexico City, in response to the Generation Z march, to show support for Sheinbaum and defend national sovereignty. “We will be there to tell her she is not alone and that she can count on us,” he indicated.
