Frölunda HC, fresh off a Champions Hockey League title, suffered another setback in the SHL with a 3-2 overtime loss to Rögle BK on Thursday evening. Despite taking the lead in the third period, Frölunda could not hold on as Felix Nilsson scored twice to secure the win for Rögle. The defeat marks Frölunda's 10th loss in their last 12 league games.
Frölunda HC entered the match against Rögle BK at their home rink in Gothenburg buoyed by their CHL victory over Luleå on Tuesday. However, the Swedish Hockey League has proven challenging, with the team struggling to maintain consistency after an early-season stint atop the standings.
The game began sluggishly for Frölunda, as coach Robert Ohlsson noted in a TV4 broadcast: "We don't start the match well, but we work our way into it." Frölunda took a 2-1 lead early in the third period when veteran Nicklas Lasu scored, forcing his way past Rögle goaltender Christoffer Rifalk. Rifalk contested the goal, telling SVT Sport: "I have a stick in my stomach pushing me into the net. They say the puck is loose, and that's the only thing they check, which I don't really buy."
Rögle equalized with 11 minutes remaining through Felix Nilsson's effort. The 20-year-old, on loan from the Nashville Predators, then sealed the victory just 15 seconds into overtime, tipping in a pass from Fredrik Olofsson. Nilsson described the play to SVT Sport: "Freddie comes with a hell of a flip pass, so I can just put it in."
Rögle coach Dan Tangnes praised his young forward in a TV4 interview: "It's completely okay to have a number 52 like Felix Nilsson, who seems to have found confidence and energy. He gets better and better week by week. We hope the development continues throughout the season."
For Frölunda, the loss extends their poor run, with only two wins since January 17 and three straight defeats in the SHL. Ohlsson remained optimistic, stating in the broadcast: "We hoped to build on that [CHL performance], absolutely. We don't need to overanalyze things; we know what we have to do." Rögle, meanwhile, snapped a two-game skid with the hard-fought triumph.
