Rory McIlroy, the 2025 Masters champion, spoke at a press conference at Augusta National on Wednesday. He reflected on his victory from last year and shared insights on handling pressure putts, advice applicable to golfers at any level. McIlroy explained his approach: “When I have to make an important putt I try to keep it so simple. I really focus on aiming correctly,” he said. “I think half the battle is just making sure you’re aiming in the right spot with the putter.” He noted that aim and alignment form the foundation of great putting, with tour professionals spending hours refining setup using tools like putting mirrors, string lines, and chalk guides. The practice aims to start the ball on the intended line and build trust in the stroke, enabling commitment under pressure. McIlroy also revealed his key swing thought: “The one thought that I have that sort of frees me up is just trying to keep the putter low through impact,” he said. “If anything, I have a tendency for the putter to rise a little bit through impact. A nice thought for me is to just keep the putter nice and low going through.” This cue promotes a smooth, controlled strike, keeping the ball rolling on line. McIlroy highlighted understanding personal tendencies and managing them, rather than seeking perfection.
