SD MP Michael Rubbestad resigns amid crime investigation

Sverigedemokraterna’s vice group leader in parliament, Michael Rubbestad, has left his posts following suspicions of child pornography offences.

Michael Rubbestad informed parliament by email on Tuesday that he is resigning as a member. He has also left his post as chairman of the municipal council in Håbo.

The party has suspended him from membership during the ongoing investigation. Party secretary Mattias Bäckström Johansson confirmed the suspension to Expressen.

The suspicions arose after a tip from the American organisation NCMEC in mid-April. Rubbestad was questioned last week and released, but the suspicions remain according to prosecutor Lena Körner. A house search has been carried out and electronic devices seized.

Linda Lindberg, SD’s group leader in parliament, described the information as troubling. Rubbestad has previously been involved in issues concerning sexual offences against children.
