Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has called on activist Sonam Wangchuk to break his hunger strike at Jantar Mantar. He urged the government to hold talks with the protesters over exam issues.
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor issued an open letter on Wednesday urging Sonam Wangchuk to end his fast. Tharoor described his appeal as coming from someone troubled by the situation facing young Indians. He noted that Parliament will be in session from Monday and said the issues should be addressed there rather than through fasting.
Wangchuk has been on hunger strike for 18 days as of Wednesday and has lost 8.9 kg. His weight stands at 57.15 kg. Doctors from Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital visit him twice daily and report that he remains stable yet faces critical days ahead under 24-hour vigilance.
Wangchuk's wife Gitanjali Angmo stated that his decision to join the Cockroach Janta Party protest was organic. She said he aims to support the youth-led movement against alleged NEET irregularities and seek the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The protest at Jantar Mantar has continued for 26 days.
