Sony plans to phase out PlayStation Network brand by September 2026

Sony intends to abandon the PlayStation Network and PSN brands by September 2026, according to an internal email reported by Insider Gaming. The move is a purely visual change to simplify branding, leaving all features intact. Signs of the shift have already appeared on PS5 menus.

Insider Gaming has obtained Sony's emailed plans to eliminate the PlayStation Network and PSN brands across all SIE assets by September 2026. The internal communication states: “To simplify and unify branding, the terms ‘PlayStation Network’ and ‘PSN’ will be phased out across all SIE assets by September 2026.” It adds: “All features currently associated with PSN, including core network features such as friends, multiplayer, and trophies, will remain unaffected and available to players.” No technical alterations are planned; the adjustment targets branding clarity in an era where online elements pervade gaming experiences. PlayStation Network originated in 2006 with the PS3 launch to differentiate online services from offline disc-based play. PlayStation Lifestyle observed early implementations on PS5, where Network options now display “PlayStation” instead of “PlayStation Network,” with the PSN logo removed from the menu. The PlayStation Network Status page has also been renamed to “PlayStation Status.” These steps aim to streamline Sony's portfolio, as PSN's distinction has grown less relevant amid ubiquitous connectivity.
