Two Muslim school teachers were allegedly assaulted in Basavakalyan, Bidar district of Karnataka, on Tuesday night, sparking communal tensions. Thousands gathered outside the police station demanding action against the attackers. The protest turned confrontational, leading to cases against protesters for attacking police personnel.
In Basavakalyan, Bidar district of Karnataka, two Muslim school teachers, Mohammed Arif (25) and Syed Imran (31), were allegedly attacked on Tuesday night. According to police, the pair was out for a walk when six to seven assailants issued death threats and pelted them with stones, resulting in head injuries. Deputy Superintendent of Police Madolappa stated that five suspects have been arrested and were reportedly under the influence of alcohol.
The Muslim community described the incident as a targeted attack. In response, thousands assembled outside the Basavakalyan police station, calling for action against the perpetrators. The gathering escalated into a confrontation, with some protesters assaulting police personnel, including Assistant Sub-Inspector Mukhtar Patel, and hurling stones. Madolappa noted, 'A case has been registered against 49 members of the Muslim community for attempting to lay siege to the police station, assaulting Patel and other staff, and throwing stones.'
Authorities reported that the situation is now under control, with additional police deployed across the town as a precautionary measure.
