Vox rejects spending ceiling in Baleares, forcing budget extension

The Balearic Parliament has rejected the spending ceiling proposed by Marga Prohens's government, forcing an extension of the 2025 budgets into 2026. Vox and the PSIB-PSOE voted against it, breaking negotiations started over disagreements on Catalan and other policies. The Popular Party executive accuses both parties of following orders from Madrid.

The Balearic Parliament plenary has rejected the spending ceiling for 2026 proposed by the PP-led government under Marga Prohens. With 30 votes against and 28 in favor, this vote leaves the executive no choice but to extend the 2025 accounts, approved in July of that year with Vox's support after concessions on issues like language choice in classrooms, fiscal reforms, and measures to curb immigration.

Negotiations stalled since September due to disagreements, particularly over Catalan, which broke ties with Vox. Vice President and Finance Minister Antoni Costa accused Vox and the PSIB-PSOE of making a 'partisan' decision influenced by Madrid. 'Pedro Sánchez and Santiago Abascal prefer that Baleares have no budgets rather than allow this Govern to do its work,' Costa stated during the debate, adding that the socialists' demands crossed 'red lines' like private property rights.

On Vox, Costa regretted that 'the requests have not existed,' calling it the 'most painful and sad' conclusion. Vox spokesperson Manuela Cañadas confirmed the break: 'It will no longer enter their game' and rejected endorsing 'fake budgets.' Meanwhile, socialist spokesperson Iago Negueruela clarified that their conditions were limited to increasing the ecotasa and taxing rental vehicles, stating that the government aimed to avoid the spending ceiling.

The government had considered this extension for weeks, with Costa insisting that governance could continue until the 2027 elections with the 2025 budget of 7.461 million euros. Prohens recently ruled out early elections.
