Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced on June 4 that Kolkata will join the central water metro project as the 18th city. The state will also participate in Sagarmala 2 with proposals worth ₹22,700 crore.
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari made the announcements after a meeting with Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. He said Kolkata would be linked to the water metro system already operating in 17 other cities including Kochi. Adhikari stated the government is considering a separate shipping wing and developing minor ports. The state will prepare projects worth ₹22,700 crore under Sagarmala 2 focusing on ports, fisheries and island development. He noted permissions for 44 new jetties and plans to promote the Gangasagar Mela internationally. A deep sea port will be developed at Dadanpatrabar after Adani Group withdrew from Tajpur due to land issues.
