Yungang grottoes cave 18 closes for maintenance due to leaks

On Monday, local authorities in Datong, Shanxi, closed Cave 18 at the Yungang Grottoes due to water leaks from excessive rainfall this year. The closure allows time for a detailed survey and scientific repairs, while the rest of the site remains open to the public.

The Yungang Grottoes in Datong, Shanxi province, are a renowned Buddhist rock-cut site in China. Cave 18 was closed by local authorities on Monday due to leaks caused by continuous rainfall exceeding 810 millimeters since the start of the year, well above the average annual precipitation. This has resulted in localized water seepage in some caves. Visitor images and videos show water dripping onto the face and neck of the Buddha statue in Cave 18, with low temperatures freezing the drips into icicles around the statue's nostrils.

The closure provides the Yungang Research Institute with time to conduct a detailed survey of cracks in the cave ceiling and address the seepage scientifically. Efforts will include disease investigation, geophysical exploration, and the installation of protective measures against rainwater. Cave 18 is a classic masterpiece of Yungang Grottoes art, featuring an oval-shaped dome and symmetrical statue layout. The sculptures reflect the majestic style and high level of multi-ethnic art exchange during the Northern Wei Dynasty (386-534), holding significant historical, artistic, and research value.

While Cave 18 is closed for maintenance, the remaining areas of the Yungang Grottoes will continue to be open to the public.
