Abu Dhabi Golden Cup set for elite Thoroughbred showdown

Abu Dhabi Racecourse is ready to host the inaugural Abu Dhabi Golden Cup, a Listed Thoroughbred race with a one-million-dollar prize purse, next Saturday. The event draws top international horses and marks the emirate's entry into global Thoroughbred racing. A strategic partnership with ADNOC underscores the UAE's commitment to equestrian sports.

Preparations are complete at Abu Dhabi Racecourse for the Abu Dhabi Golden Cup, scheduled for next Saturday. This new Listed category race introduces a world-class Thoroughbred event to the emirate's equestrian calendar, offering a one-million-dollar prize that positions it among the most lucrative in its class worldwide.

The main attraction features elite international entrants, including Strauss trained by Ryo Taki, Witness Stand by Dr. Richard Newland and Jamie Insole, Holloway Boy by Karl Burke, Qudwa by Simon and Ed Crisford, Comanche Brave by Donnacha O’Brien, Maljoom by Michael Costa, and Juncal by Andrew Balding. Horses rated 95 or above, aged four years and older—or three-year-olds—are eligible, with fillies and mares receiving a two-kilogram weight allowance for balance.

Ali Al Shaiba, General Manager of Abu Dhabi Equestrian Club and Racecourse, highlighted the race's significance: "The race has attracted elite international horses that reflect the UAE’s position on the global horse racing map." He added that it represents a qualitative addition, drawing worldwide attention to the prestigious track.

The victor earns an automatic invitation to the Grade 1 Old Forester Bourbon Turf Classic, also worth one million dollars, at Churchill Downs on Kentucky Derby day. This link elevates the event's global profile.

Supporting the headline race are seven events blending Thoroughbreds and Purebred Arabians, including the Group 1 Al Anoud Classic over 2200 meters, Group 2 Liwa Oasis Stakes over 1400 meters, and the Listed first round of the Arabian Triple Crown over 1600 meters for four-year-old Arabians.

Abu Dhabi has secured a three-year sponsorship from ADNOC for 2026-2028, with Etihad Airways as the presenting partner for the opening race. The trophy, crafted by British jeweler Garrard, incorporates Emirati motifs like the Ghaf tree, Sadu patterns, and equestrian symbols.

Beyond the track, attendees can enjoy renovated facilities, Michelin-starred dining at Hakkasan, live performances, a Best Dressed competition, family activities, and a DJ-led post-race party. Final field and draw details are pending confirmation.
