Bishoftu Abusera Airport Project Set to Deliver Economic Benefits

The Bishoftu Abusera International Airport project is under construction at a cost of 12.5 billion dollars. The first phase is scheduled for completion by 2030. The project aims to create jobs and increase foreign currency earnings.

During construction the project employs thousands of engineers and workers. Once operational it will create permanent jobs in airlines, hotels and logistics sectors.

The first phase is due for completion by 2030 with capacity for 60 million passengers a year. Full completion will raise annual capacity to 110 million passengers. Land preparation has received 610 million dollars in funding.

The airport will include modern hotels, shopping centers and cargo complexes. It is expected to connect to Addis Ababa via expressway and high-speed rail. The project is intended to boost foreign currency earnings and support growth of industrial parks.

The Addis Ababa City Council on 30 Miyazia 2018 approved appointments presented by Mayor Adanech Abiebe and an additional budget of 9.94 billion birr in a unanimous vote during its regular session.

Ethiopia has secured major backing from US government agencies, finance institutions and companies for the Bishoftu International Airport construction. The institutions announced support via the Washington financial roadmap. Officials described it as one of Africa's flagship aviation projects.

Minister Berhanu Nega stated the schools will be built in collaboration with regional offices and ready with quality standards for the 2019 Ethiopian calendar school year.
