Suliman Carrim has asked the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry to postpone his testimony and hear the application in private. The request follows reports that he was seen shopping in Cape Town despite earlier claims of medical unfitness. The commission postponed the hearing to next week.
Suliman Carrim, also recorded as Suleiman Carrim, did not attend the Madlanga Commission proceedings on 17 July 2026. His lawyers sought to delay his further testimony. Evidence leader Matthew Chaskalson told the commission that Carrim wants the postponement application heard in camera.
Carrim cited risks to his privacy, dignity, medical treatment and family safety. He said public disclosure could harm his standing in his religious community and his wife’s business. The commission will decide on 23 July whether the application can be heard privately.
On 15 July, Chaskalson reported whistleblower accounts placing Carrim at a Cape Town mall, where he reportedly visited a Woolworths store and had lunch. The commission is seeking to verify the reports with CCTV footage. Carrim must still provide financial statements for three companies before the inquiry continues.
