Charter Books to host Julian Sancton for book discussion on March 29

Charter Books in Newport, Rhode Island, along with the Newport Historical Society, will host New York Times bestselling author Julian Sancton for a talk on his new book. The event, focused on 'Neptune’s Fortune,' is scheduled for Sunday, March 29, from 5 to 6 p.m. It is free and open to the public, with an RSVP encouraged.

The discussion at Charter Books, located at 8 Broadway in Newport, will center on Julian Sancton's recently published book, 'Neptune’s Fortune: The Billion-Dollar Shipwreck and the Ghosts of the Spanish Empire.' Released on February 24, the book recounts the story of Roger Dooley, a treasure hunter who stumbled upon a key discovery in a Spanish archive during the 1980s. This find sparked a decades-long pursuit to locate the San Jose, a Spanish galleon that sank off the coast of Colombia almost three centuries ago. The vessel was carrying more than $1 billion worth of gold and silver at the time.

Following the main talk, attendees can participate in a question-and-answer session and a book signing. To attend, individuals are asked to RSVP via the bookstore's events page at charterbookstore.com/events.

Sancton, a senior features editor at Departures magazine, has previously authored 'Madhouse at the End of the Earth.' His writing has appeared in publications including Vanity Fair, Esquire, The New Yorker, and Wired.

Charter Books, an independent bookstore established in 2020, operates at 8 Broadway. Its hours are Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. More details are available on the store's website, charterbookstore.com.
