Chilean opposition prepares tsunami of amendments against mega-reform

A viral video showed opposition lawmakers announcing more than 2,000 amendments to the national reconstruction project. Biminister Daniel Mas and President José Antonio Kast criticized the strategy as an obstacle to growth.

On Friday morning, a video of PPD deputy Jaime Araya went viral on social media. The lawmaker stated that opposition parties including the PC, Frente Amplio, PS, PPD and DC would present around 2,500 amendments to the reconstruction project.

Araya said: “It is not a flood, we are already in the tsunami”. He added that the goal was to create a complex debate for the government. Biminister Daniel Mas replied on X that a certain sector of the left had decided to turn its back on growth.

President José Antonio Kast lamented that part of the opposition aimed to obstruct the project. Spokesperson Mara Sedini accused legislative sabotage. Senator Luciano Cruz-Coke of Evópoli also criticized the “blatant bad faith” of left-wing deputies.

Opposition lawmakers announced plans to submit over two thousand amendments to the national reconstruction project pushed by President José Antonio Kast's government. The move drew accusations of legislative sabotage from the executive branch, while some opposition sectors distanced themselves from the strategy.

The Chamber of Deputies' Finance Committee began on Tuesday the detailed discussion of President José Antonio Kast's reconstruction and economic reactivation megareform, amid tensions over more than 1,295 amendments filed by the opposition.

Deputies Raúl Soto of the PPD and Daniela Serrano of the PC are analyzing a challenge before the Constitutional Tribunal against the National Reconstruction project pushed by José Antonio Kast's government.
