China's Housing Ministry has ordered local governments to strengthen drainage and flood controls as Super Typhoon Bavi approaches eastern China.
The Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development instructed local authorities at a nationwide video conference on Wednesday to conduct risk assessments, tighten controls on flood-prone roads and coordinate with meteorological and other departments.
Super Typhoon Bavi had maximum sustained winds of 175 km/h as of 8pm Thursday and is moving toward the seas east of Taiwan before approaching eastern China. More than 40 flights from Hong Kong to Taiwan, Japan and mainland China were cancelled, with carriers waiving change fees.
Shanghai expects impacts from Friday while Beijing has halted outdoor activities. Residents in Hangzhou are stocking supplies and taping windows amid uncertainty over landfall.
