China rail gun achieves milestone with guided projectile test

A Chinese research team has successfully tested a guided projectile prototype for an electromagnetic rail gun, with the device surviving extreme conditions and recording its flight.

The breakthrough test was carried out by a team led by associate professor Ge Shuangchao at North University of China. The experiment verified that the prototype can survive an extreme environment of an 8 ms pulse width, 20,000g-force overload, and a 7 T magnetic flux density. The results were published in the Journal of North University of China in May. The test took place in Taiyuan and marks progress in smart munitions technology.
