Pittsburgh Steelers long snapper Christian Kuntz has lauded running back Kenneth Gainwell for his impactful plays across multiple roles this season. Gainwell, signed to a one-year deal, has exceeded expectations by contributing on offense and special teams. His efforts have provided crucial sparks for the 7-6 Steelers.
The Pittsburgh Steelers have navigated a challenging 7-6 season, relying on unexpected contributors to stay competitive. Kenneth Gainwell, acquired as a backup to Jaylen Warren, has emerged as a versatile asset in various facets of the game.
In a recent podcast, Steelers long snapper Christian Kuntz highlighted Gainwell's game-changing moment in Week 1 against the New York Jets. "Kenny Gainwell won us the fucking Jets game, bro. Punched that ball out on kickoff, Steelers get it, touchdown, we go up. Kenny Gainwell is an unbelievable football player, man," Kuntz said. He added, "Unbelievable running back, but like a football player, that dude, you could roll him out on all four special teams phases, and he will be productive."
Gainwell's special teams play forced a fumble from the Jets' kick returner, enabling the Steelers to score and secure a late lead. Without it, the outcome might have differed.
On offense, Gainwell stepped up notably in Week 4 against the Minnesota Vikings, with Jaylen Warren sidelined, rushing for 99 yards and revitalizing the ground game. He followed with 92 rushing yards in a loss to the Chicago Bears and 81 receiving yards against the Cincinnati Bengals. Against the Buffalo Bills, Gainwell made a one-handed catch and gained nearly 15 yards after contact, providing a boost when the offense struggled.
Kuntz also noted similar team efforts, like wide receiver DK Metcalf serving as a gunner despite his high salary and strong receiving performance. Gainwell's reliability as a depth player has made a strong case for his future with the Steelers.
