Colombia buys 17 Gripen fighter jets

Saab has signed an agreement with the Colombian government for 17 Gripen E/F fighter jets, worth 3.1 billion euros. The deal was signed in Cali with Swedish ministers present and includes equipment, weapons, and training. It marks a strong partnership between the countries.

Saab announced on November 15, 2025, that the company has signed an agreement with the Colombian government for an order of 17 Jas Gripen fighter jets. The contract covers 15 Gripen E and two Gripen F, along with associated equipment, weapons, training, and support. Deliveries are scheduled between 2026 and 2032.

The deal is worth 3.1 billion euros, equivalent to about 34 billion kronor, and is described as one of Sweden's largest export deals ever. The agreement was signed in the city of Cali in western Colombia on Friday, with Aid and Trade Minister Benjamin Dousa (M) in attendance. 'The sale of Jas Gripen to Colombia is one of Sweden's largest export deals ever. It is a deal that strengthens both Swedish security and economy, and shows the clear connection between trade and security,' says Dousa in a press release from the Foreign Ministry.

Saab CEO Micael Johansson expresses pride in the choice: 'I am very proud that Colombia has now chosen Gripen E/F to strengthen its air defense.' He adds: 'This is the beginning of a strong and long-term partnership that will strengthen Colombia's defense capability and security, create benefits for the country's inhabitants, and benefit Colombia's innovation power.'

The parties have also signed two offset agreements covering military and social projects, including industrial cooperation in aviation technology, cybersecurity, health, sustainable energy, and water purification. Defense Minister Pål Jonson welcomes the deal: 'It is clear proof of the competitiveness of the Swedish defense industry and high technological capability. With Gripen, Colombia gets one of the world's most advanced fighter jets. I look forward to deepening the defense policy cooperation.'

Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard emphasizes the good relations: 'Sweden and Colombia have very good relations that stretch far back.' In 2024, the countries celebrated 150 years of diplomatic relations. The deal follows Saab's summer order from Thailand for four Gripen E/D jets worth about 5.3 billion kronor, with deliveries from 2025 to 2030.

Cosa dice la gente

Reactions on X to Colombia's $3.1 billion deal for 17 Saab Gripen E/F fighter jets are diverse. Positive sentiments highlight the modernization of the air force, fulfillment of President Petro's promise, and strengthened ties with Sweden for peace and defense. Critics express skepticism over the high cost—nearly $1 billion per jet—potential corruption, overpricing compared to Thailand's deal, and misplaced priorities amid needs for anti-air defenses and equipment upgrades. Neutral posts focus on factual details like delivery timelines from 2026-2032 and training inclusions.
