Commonwealth Foundation clears writers of AI use

The Commonwealth Foundation has cleared three writers accused of using AI in their prize-winning short stories. An investigation concluded that no AI tools were involved in the works.

Director-General Razmi Farook stated that the organization spent the past month investigating the allegations through detailed discussions with all five regional winners. The writers provided working drafts, time-stamped documents and notes to support their submissions.

The foundation determined that AI was not used to write the winning stories. No AI tools were employed during the review itself due to concerns over artistic ownership and consent.

Granta has ended its partnership with the Commonwealth Foundation and will no longer publish the winning stories. The winner of the 2026 Short Story Prize is scheduled to be announced on June 30 alongside a film about the regional winners.
