Couple held for killing son over frequent harassment in Chennai

Ambattur police arrested a couple for murdering their 30-year-old son, who repeatedly harassed them under the influence of alcohol. The incident came to light on Sunday morning when his body was found under suspicious circumstances at their residence. The couple confessed to the crime during interrogation.

The Ambattur Police arrested a couple, Manmadhan, 57, and Kalyani, 54, on Monday for the murder of their 30-year-old son Sridhar, an auto driver. Sridhar lived with his parents in Kalyanapuram near the Ambattur Police Station after separating from his wife. According to police, Sridhar became addicted to alcohol post-separation and frequently brought other women home. Under the influence, he would create a ruckus, vandalize the house, and assault his parents, depriving them of sleep for over 10 days.

On Saturday night, Manmadhan, a butcher, returned home to find his wife Kalyani standing outside, afraid to enter due to Sridhar's chaos inside. Enraged, Manmadhan entered with a pork chopping knife and fatally slashed Sridhar's neck. He cleaned the bloodstains using a floor cleaner, dropped Kalyani at their daughter's house, and fled on his bike.

To divert suspicion, Manmadhan called neighbor Vijayakumar to check if ₹3,000 kept in the almirah was still there. The neighbor discovered Sridhar's body and alerted the police. Assistant Commissioner of Police Frank D. Ruben initiated the investigation and sent the body for post-mortem. During interrogation, the couple confessed. Manmadhan was arrested for murder and Kalyani for abetting the crime. Further investigation is underway.
