Developer prototypes thumb-typing Linux handheld PC

A Redditor has unveiled an early prototype of a compact Linux handheld computer designed for distraction-free coding on the go. The device resembles a tiny laptop with a thumb keyboard and runs on Raspberry Pi hardware. The creator plans a crowdfunding campaign once the design is finalized.

Handheld gaming PCs have evolved from ultra-mobile PCs of two decades ago, but many lack keyboards and extended battery life for broader computing tasks. In response, DIY projects using single-board computers like the Raspberry Pi have gained popularity.

Redditor stopdesign recently showcased a prototype of a new Linux handheld aimed at portable coding. Described as a 'tiny laptop designed for thumb typing,' it targets users seeking to code 'in the bed/bathroom/wherever without distractions.' The device features a 5.5-inch 720p LCD display, a thumb keyboard, a clamshell case, a Raspberry Pi Zero 2W, an 8,000 mAh battery, and a 4G LTE modem.

Currently a work in progress, the prototype is not yet available for purchase, and designs cannot be downloaded. Stopdesign intends to launch a crowdfunding campaign to produce and distribute the computers to backers after finalizing the model.

The project highlights ongoing interest in versatile, portable Linux devices beyond gaming.
