Doe appoints youngest ever assistant secretary

The Department of Energy has appointed 25-year-old Mandy Romero as its new assistant secretary, making her the youngest in the department's history and among the youngest in government. She took her oath before Energy Secretary Sharon Garin, known for rapid infrastructure restoration after typhoons and promoting clean energy.

In Manila, Mandy Romero took her oath as the new assistant secretary of the Department of Energy, a landmark appointment given her age of 25 years. This makes her the youngest in DOE history and among the youngest assistant secretaries in government. The choice of Romero highlights Secretary Garin's confidence in youth leadership and fresh perspectives for the country's energy transition.

Prior to joining the DOE, Romero served as the Philippine youth representative to the United Nations, where she addressed the UN floor in New York during the 68th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women. There, she advocated for equitable policies on education access, zero poverty reforms, rural electrification, and food insecurity. Additionally, she founded Capital1 Solar Energy, which develops industrial-scale solar power plants across the nation.

She graduated magna cum laude from Georgetown University, ranking top in her program. Romero also advocates for women's sports through the Capital1 Solar Spikers in the PVL.

"Serving our country is the greatest honor of my life. I’m inspired to work alongside the dedicated and passionate public servants of the DOE," Romero said.
