The Eagles' 'Their Greatest Hits (1971–1975)' has become the first album to achieve quadruple diamond certification from the RIAA, surpassing 40 million units sold in the US. This milestone cements its position as the bestselling album of all time. The band is marking the occasion with a vinyl reissue and a Las Vegas residency.
The RIAA announced on January 22, 2026, that the Eagles' compilation album 'Their Greatest Hits (1971–1975)', released on February 17, 1976, has reached quadruple diamond status for over 40 million certified units. This makes it the top-selling album in US history, outpacing Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' at 34 times platinum and the Eagles' own 'Hotel California' at 28 times platinum.
Originally the first album to earn platinum certification in 1976—the same year the award was introduced—the record spent five weeks at number one on the Billboard 200. It was later inducted into the Library of Congress' National Recording Registry in 2017 for its cultural and historical significance. A sequel, 'Eagles Greatest Hits Vol. 2', followed in 1982 and also achieved diamond status.
Don Henley, the band's singer-songwriter, reflected on the enduring appeal in a statement to the Associated Press: “In an age, in a culture, where everything seems to become more ephemeral, by the day, it is gratifying to have been part of something that endures, even for 50 years. We are amazed and grateful.”
The certification now includes streaming equivalents, with 1,500 streams counting as one album sale since the RIAA updated its rules in 2013 to account for platforms like Spotify and Apple Music.
To celebrate, the Eagles are reissuing the album on crystal-clear, heavyweight vinyl on February 13, 2026—four days before its 50th anniversary—with preorders available now. The 40x platinum plaque will be displayed at Third Encore, an immersive fan experience at the Venetian in Las Vegas.
The band resumes its residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas on January 23, 2026, with 12 performances scheduled: January 23, 24, 30, 31; February 20, 21, 27, 28; and March 20, 21, 27, 28.
