Election of Honorio Henríquez as Senate president marks defeat for Abelardismo

Senator Rafael Nieto Loaiza stated that Honorio Henríquez's victory as Senate president represents a defeat for designated minister Rodrigo Lara Restrepo. He highlighted respect for Congress autonomy from the Executive. Centro Democrático overcame the attempt to impose Alfredo Deluque.

According to Nieto Loaiza, the election broke the tradition that the largest government party bench designates the Senate president. De La Espriella and his team tried to impose a candidate from a smaller party, which undermined Congress independence.

The Uribista senator noted the result sends a clear message: “Si el Abelardismo nos ataca, nos vamos a defender y lo podemos derrotar”. He added that Centro Democrático will continue supporting De La Espriella's government on positive initiatives but will maintain its political oversight role.

Nieto Loaiza also criticized holding the presidential inauguration at a military garrison, arguing it erodes republican institutionalism. He said he would not attend such an act if held in a barracks.
