Ethiopia's National Election Board registered more than 54 million voters for the June 1, 2026, election. Polling was suspended in 46 constituencies, 38 in Tigray and 8 in Amhara, due to security issues.
The African Union and IGAD observer missions noted long queues in Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa that prompted an extension until midnight. They recommended capping voters per station at 1,000 instead of the current 1,500 limit.
The European Union and other partners welcomed the vote while calling for inclusive polling in the remaining areas. Ethiopia's Human Rights Commission confirmed the process was peaceful and met democratic standards.
