Father upheld by JO after reporting preschool pride parade

A parent in Kalmar municipality reported the preschool's pride activity to the Parliamentary Ombudsman. The JO upholds the father on several points and criticizes the preschool.

The preschool described its pride parade during pride week in September 2025 as voluntary. The father argued that children who did not participate missed an activity packaged as fun and that participation was therefore not voluntary.

The JO states that the children had not reached an age where they could have their own insight into the issues. Since the preschool did not request consent from guardians, the JO considers the children to have been forced to participate.

The JO criticizes the principal and believes the preschool should avoid activities that could be perceived as demonstrations or expressions of opinion. The father had also argued that it is not appropriate for preschool children to engage in politics.
