Retired General Ryamizard Ryacudu passed away on Sunday, May 31 2026, at 14:03 WIB in RSPAD Gatot Soebroto, Jakarta. Several prominent figures have expressed condolences.
Ryamizard Ryacudu died after treatment in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit. He served as Army Chief of Staff from 2002 to 2005 and as Defense Minister from 2014 to 2019.
Home Affairs Minister Muhammad Tito Karnavian paid respects at the family home in Bogor on the same day. He described Ryamizard as a respected figure close to communities in southern Sumatra.
Army Chief of Staff General Maruli Simanjuntak recalled Ryamizard’s contributions to soldier training and the creation of Raider units. Former President Megawati Soekarnoputri also conveyed condolences, remembering his swift assistance during the Aceh disaster.
The Defense Ministry will hold a farewell ceremony on Monday, June 1 2026, before a military burial at Kalibata National Heroes Cemetery.
