HBO has announced that its DC Universe series Lanterns will premiere on Sunday, August 16. The show features Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and John Stewart investigating a murder in the American heartland. Kyle Chandler stars as Jordan, mentoring Aaron Pierre's Stewart.
HBO revealed the premiere date for Lanterns in an Instagram post on Thursday, stating, “Beware my power, Green Lantern's light.” The series, set to debut on August 16 on the network and its streaming service Max, adapts DC Comics characters into a story of two intergalactic cops tackling a dark, Earth-based mystery involving a murder investigation in the American heartland. Kyle Chandler, known for Friday Night Lights and Bloodline, plays veteran Lantern Hal Jordan, who mentors new recruit John Stewart, portrayed by Aaron Pierre of Genius and The Morning Show. The cast also includes Kelly Macdonald from Boardwalk Empire and Dept. Q. Chris Mundy of Ozark serves as showrunner and co-creator alongside Tom King, who is involved with the upcoming Supergirl film, and Damon Lindelof of Lost. They executive-produce with James Gunn, Peter Safran, Ron Schmidt, and James Hawes. The announcement has generated buzz among DC Comics fans ahead of the summer release.
